Origin of SkEyes Unlimited

In 1991 Dr. Omead Amidi and Dr. Takeo Kanade started the autonomous helicopter laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute. First, using an electric model helicopter, they demonstrated autonomous flight using only image feedback. In 1996, they demonstrated outdoor flight using only image feedback using a system on-board the R50 Yamaha helicopter. In 1997, the team won the "International Aerial Robotics Competition." In 1998, the team built 3D maps of portions of the Haughton Crater in the Arctic for NASA scientists.

Dr. James Ryan Miller has been a member of the team since 1996 and has researched and developed laser systems.

SkEyes Unlimited, a spin-off from Carnegie Mellon in 2003, was started by this team and their first project was to build an autonomous system for Yamaha motor's RMAX helicopter which could build 3D aerial maps.
